You new here? That's all right, you'll settle in soon enough... You know, the Zone is a tough teacher. I'm Beard, the local bartender. Got any questions, you come to me, y' hear?
― Beard

Beard (Ru. Boroda/Борода) is the bartender of the Skadovsk during the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Background[]

He is the bartender on the Skadovsk and also runs an artifact trading business with clients outside the Zone[quote. 1]. He was one of the first stalkers to arrive at Zaton, eventually establishing a camp and bar in the Skadovsk with the help of Grouse, among others[quote. 2].

Beard employs a number of stalkers for his business, namely a group of artifact hunters led by Crest and Sledgehammer, and a security detail led by Spartacus. He has been involved in a conflict with the local Bandits leader, Sultan, who has been attempting to take over the Skadovsk and Beard's business for some time[quote. 3]. In spite of this, Beard also welcomes Bandits aboard the ship, stating that not all of them are bad people[quote. 4]. He also does not get along with Owl, partly because of the latter having relations with Sultan's bandits, but also because of Beard's monopoly on the artifact trade in Zaton[quote. 5].

Apperances[]

Call of Pripyat[]

Beard is one of three traders in Zaton (the others being Owl and Tremor), although he only sells consumables such as food and vodka, although his trade offer may be extended to include low-tier artifacts depending on the completion of certain side missions on the stalkers' side. He will also warn the player about incoming emissions when in Zaton.

Beard offers various missions on aiding the Stalkers in Zaton, some of which branch out into more missions, and ultimately lead to gaining the achievement One of Ours if the player completes enough of them. Most of the missions given by Beard can be countered by taking one from Sultan which puts the player on the opposite side of the mission for profit.

Beard can also give the player missions to find specific artifacts he needs; the player will be given a period of time to find the artifact, and if the artifact is not found in time, another stalker in the Zone will find it and the player will have the option to buy it off the other stalker or trade a "high-end shooter" for it before they make it to Skadovsk and give it to Beard. Alternatively, if the player is an avid anomaly-diver, they can gather artifacts and return to Beard to ask which artifacts he needs - he'll pay a hefty fee if the player has it immediately available, and the player won't have to worry about competition from Beard's artifact hunters. He will stop asking for artifacts if two of his "artifact squads" are killed.

If the player decides to side with Sultan and obtain the Boss achievement instead, Beard will no longer offer his artifact hunting missions and changes his dialogue accordingly. Instead, the player can demand a payment once per day (randomized between 500 and 2500 RU). If this is not collected, especially if the player is in another area, it will accumulate.

Related missions[]

  • Strange Phenomenon: Beard requests the player to investigate the source of strange lights observed at the Dredge Station.
  • Missing Stalkers: At the end of the mission, Beard must be informed about the truth behind the disappearance of stalkers in Zaton.
  • Bloodsucker Lair: The player must inform Beard of the existence of a Bloodsucker Lair underneath the Krug Antenna Complex, after what Beard will devise a plan to destroy it using chemical weapons.
  • The Hit: The player can talk to Beard after receiving this mission, who will proceed to alert Spartacus of the impending raid.
  • Transaction: If the mission The Hit has been completed for the Loners, then Beard will ask the player to assist Spartacus into disrupting the arms deal between Morgan and Sultan's bandits.
  • Tempting Business: Beard will give the player a Svarog detector when interrogating him about the deal with Owl, stating he's no longer interested in buying it anymore.
  • Compass: Beard asks the player to obtain a rare Compass artifact from Noah.
  • Shady Business: Sultan asks the player to bring Beard's business under his control, which requires the player to deliver the Compass to Sultan and eliminate Beard's artifact hunters.
  • Artifact order: a repeatable mission offered by Beard, which requires the player to find a specific artifact.

Endings[]

Beard has two possible endings depending on the player's actions during the course of the game:

  • If the achievement Boss has been obtained, then the ending reveals that Sultan's "order" has settled firmly on the Skadvosk, which prompted Bear to leave the ship and explore uncharted regions of the Zone with a group of stalkers.
  • If the achievement One of Ours, then the ending reveals that Sultan was forced to leave the Skadovsk following his foiled takeover attempt, prompting Beard's business to flourish even more and his bar to become almost as popular as the 100 Rads.

Greetings

Hello! What brings you to our humble vessel?

Welcome aboard our swamp icebreaker, ha!

Farewell

Drop in if something interesting comes up. Skadovsk won't be going anywhere, that's for sure.

Pop in if you find any artifacts and we'll see what we can do.

Greetings

The ship has been ashore a long time, but it's still full of rats. Up to what do we owe this dubious pleasure?

What do you want?

Farewell

Are we done here? Yes? Good. The exit is over there.

Yeah, you go on now. Dealing with leeches is not high on my list of priorities.

Trivia[]

  • So far, he is the only unique stalker in the entire series to be seen using a radiation suit without the helmet.
  • He is the only trader in-game that can purchase Batteries and their homemade variant from the player, and does so for full price (2000 RU per pack of 10 and 6 rounds, respectively). This may stem from a developer's oversight, as both ammo varieties are not listed among the goods he can and cannot buy, which defaults to allowing him to buy at the default price, unlike other traders.

  4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R Beard: "I got nothing against 'em on board the Skadovsk, so long as they act decent. After all, you don't meet total douche bags all that often. Some of them are actually former stalkers. Who knows, one of them poor bastards might actually decide to give up the crook business before he catches a bullet... Life is full of surprises."
  5. S.T.A.L.K.E.R Random stalker dialogue: "There's a trader on Skadovsk, Owl's his name. Not the most pleasant of people. Always complaining how all the artifacts go to Beard and not him, but if you need money, you can see what's he's got to offer."
