The Garbage. We are right at home here. You see the heaps of crap? You don't want to go there, trust me. So full of radioactive waste, the Geiger counters go off the scale.
― Bes

Bes (Ru. Бес) is an experienced Loner appearing in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Background[]

Hiding in the Zone from the law. Tries to maintain order in the Zone on his terms. Fights against the bandits. Cruel but fair[non-game. 1].

Bes entered the Zone to hide from the law. He was wanted for two counts of murder and inflicting grievous bodily harm, after attacking a group of people who beat up one of his friends severely. When the police arrived, he was forced to shoot one of the perpetrators and jump out of a third story window[quote. 1]. After these events, he escaped to the Zone.

He tries to maintain order on his terms[quote. 2]. Despite his self-professed mission to "fight the lawless", he doesn't want to join Duty due to their allegiance with the Ukrainian government and a high possibility of waking up one day in a jail cell[quote. 3].

He is cruel to the Bandits but fair to everyone that respects his opinions. His motivation for fighting the Bandits is moral; he believes in acting like a human being and being selfless, as opposed to greedy[quote. 4].

Appearances[]

Shadow of Chernobyl[]

He is the commander of a small, neutral squad operating in the derelict machinery scrapyard, which is located in the Garbage. He owns the unique Akm 74/2U Special and gives one mission to repel a Bandit raid, in which one must assist him and his team against Vasya Boar and accompanying Bandits. More Bandit attacks follow later.

If Bes survives the Bandit attacks and eventual mutant attacks, he may wander off to the Wild Territory or the Army Warehouses. He has a high chance of dying in both areas, either to mutants or Mercenaries. More usually though, his squad will defeat the bandit camp that harasses them and transfer to it as a base of operations.

Quote Condition

People, this is the commander of the neutral squad! We've kicked the bandits out of the derelict machinery scrapyard. Expecting counterattack. We're low on numbers, so everyone is welcome to give us a helping hand.

After Yurik's robbery scene

Good job, guys. Take your positions.

After the stalker reports the bandits' arrival

Everybody, take your stand. Let them come close. They will be easier targets.

When the bandits approach the scrapyard

Great job, boys, we wiped them out! Everybody has some rest. And you, stalker, come over here, let's have a chat.

Trivia[]

  • "Bes" is Russian for demon.
  • There is a glitch in which Bes could be gravely injured but the player cannot heal him. He will still call for help but the player can proceed to trade with him normally.
