The Browning Hi-Power (Called HPSS-1m in games) is a 9x19mm caliber pistol that appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Contents

BackgroundEdit

The pistol was initially designed by John Browning in 1921 and finalized by Dieudonné Saive of Fabrique Nationale after Browning's death. The weapon was revolutionary at the time of it's creation, holding a (at the time) very large magazine capacity of 13 rounds. The weapon is one of the most widely used military weapons in history, first being used in World War II. It is a single action, semi automatic pistol with a metal frame. The weapon was among the first pistols to showcase the staggered magazine type – the placement of rounds in the magazine in a "zigzag" fashion allowed extra rounds to be carried without increasing the bulk of the grip substantially. Worth considering is the fact that it shoots slower than most other semi-automatic pistols in the games. The Browning Hi-Power is also known as one of the "Wonder Nines", refering to not only it's caliber, but it's service record and accuracy.

AppearancesEdit

Clear SkyEdit

CharacteristicsEdit

It deals the same amount of damage as all other 9x19mm pistols, however it shoots slower and has a smaller magazine capacity. The 13 round capacity is better than the 9x18mm pistols, but it is beat out by guns like the Beretta 92F and the P99. This makes the gun a generally average all-around pistol. It's nothing special, but is a noticeable upgrade from some of the first pistols the player encounters.

Notable deploymentsEdit

This weapon is carried by experienced Loners, Bandits, and Renegades.

AcquisitionEdit

It can be acquired in the Cordon near the entrances to the Garbage, and more can be found in the Garbage.

Call of Pripyat Edit

The HPSS-1M, as seen in the game.

Characteristics Edit

It is a good all-rounder, but other pistols are better at filling niche fields, such as the Black Kite for damage, the USP Compact for rate of fire and damage, or the Makarov PM for weight. Not much has changed from it's other appearances as far as specs go, but a noted concern is that since it shares ammo with the MP5, if you carry both in your inventory you may find yourself abruptly out of ammo, a concern considering 9x19mm relative rarity. On the other hand, carrying the same type of ammunition for both weapons simplifies ammunition requirements and allows you to carry more 9x19 mm ammunition when it may otherwise be taken up by another ammunition type.

Notable deployments Edit

In Call of Pripyat, this gun is often carried by experienced Loners.

Background information Edit

Shadow of Chernobyl appearance Edit

The Hi-Power is present in Shadow of Chernobyl's game files, fully working, but doesn't appear anywhere in the game world. It isn't used by anyone and can't be found or bought. Activating it is as simple as placing it in the game world somewhere (such as in a trader's stock, so you can buy it). Once activated, this is one of the best pistols in the game, doing more damage than any other pistol or even any assault rifle, however it has less penetration abilities due to its caliber.

Development Edit

  • It's one of the oldest weapons in STALKER and the first pistol in the series, as it appears in Build 1098; the first build available. It subsequently appeared in Build 1114.
