Crows are the only bird species to have survived in the Zone, enduring increased radiation levels and effectively avoiding anomalies. They appear in all three S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.
While the army pilots need to rely on complex detectors to avoid gravitational disturbances, the crows seems to rely on their own senses for that – a mystery that drives ornithologists and biologists mad. Various theories attempting to explain the phenomenon exist, all of them pointing to a highly specialized development of the bird's brain.
While crows can often be seen in outside areas in the games they don't pose any kind of threat. You can still shoot them down but they don't drop any loot.
- A mini-game in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky involves shooting a number of crows in 60 seconds. This can be found in the Bandit base, and is activated by talking to Flayer.
- In both Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat, crows are killed during emissions. It is not uncommon to witness dozens of dead crows raining from the sky at once.
- Even though crows are supposed to be the only birds in the Zone, the sound of songbirds can clearly be heard in Clear Sky in the Cordon, possibly an oversight on the part of the developers.
- They may pass through solid objects, such as Yanov Station.
