The Enfield L85A1 (Called IL 86 in games) is a British-made bullpup assault rifle. It is currently the service rifle of the British Army as part of the SA80 "Small Arms for the 1980s" program. The weapon is featured in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.
The weapon is used mostly by veteran members of certain factions. The rifle is notable for its integral SUSAT scope. It uses 5.56×45mm rounds. It is worth noting that this is the heaviest assault rifle in all games.
The IL 86 is slightly less accurate than other assault rifles like the TRs-301 and SGi-5k, and is the heaviest assault rifle available (weighing it at 5.0kg unloaded) but sports above average durability (jamming commonly after it goes past 70% though) and damage compared to the equally available TRs-301. The IL 86, with its integral SUSAT scope, is likely to be the first scoped weapon you come across.
The weapon is often used by stalkers from Ecologists faction. Mostly:
The personnel from the shot down helicopter in Wild Territory were defending themselves using these rifles from attacking mercenaries lead by Wolfhound.
Members of the failed Ecologist's expedition sent into Lab X-19 prior to the visiting of these labs by the Marked One, were also equipped with this rifle.
This weapon is also used in small numbers by many other factions, including:
Experienced Loner stalkers.
A few members of the Duty faction in the main base in the Bar.
The IL 86 is still primarily used by experienced and veteran loners and freedom members and a few mercenaries. The L85 performs somewhat poorly compared to other assault rifles as it has slightly inferior handling and accuracy, is heavy (5.0kg unloaded) and is prone to jamming when worn. On the other hand, it has higher damage than the TRs-301 and is cheaper, while its integral SUSAT scope is also a plus.
The IL 86 share the same upgrade tree as the TRs 301 except for the scope modification. The scope can be upgraded to either increase its zoom (if one wishes it to be a marksman's rifle) or reduce its zoom (if one wishes to use it as a close quarters weapon).
The IL 86 appears again in Call of Pripyat. Available from early game Stalkers, Freedom stalkers, some mercenaries, right through to late-game Monolith stalkers. Its scope zoom cannot be reduced in Call of Pripyat, only increased from 1.4x to 4x. It's a decent weapon early and late in the game with its expandable scope that easily makes it a good sniper weapon, even though it is not very accurate without modifications, and stock scope that gives it decent CQB performance along with fairly good stats, though still offset by its weight of 5.00kg.
While it still sports horrendous performance when damaged like its previous incarnation, its upgrade tree is now focused in turning it into the revised L85A2 as its durability can be increased by 75% in total when all of the durability options are installed. It can be made to be modified to mount a silencer and it cannot mount a grenade launcher. It is also the only NATO weapon that can be modified to chamber more common 5.45×39mm rounds, allowing it to stride through ammunition concerns early in the game. It is also an effective early game sniping weapon as it is the only rifle that can fire 5.45 rounds and use a silencer. The Storm can also equip a silencer and a scope while chambered to fire 5.45 rounds, but it has substantial bullet drop which makes long range aiming problematic unless fully upgraded.
It was one of the earlier weapons introduced into the game, as it exists in Build 1935, and can even be found in the Cordon, in the top floor of the old factory. This model has an M203 Grenade Launcher.
Currently the Enfield L85 is being manufactured by the Royal Ordnance's Nottingham Small Arms Facility. In Clear Sky, the variant of the SA80 was the initial variant L85 made during the 1990s, which were unreliable due to always needing lubrication and more than 50 other recorded faults within the weapon, which pretty much compromised its use to the British Army. It is assumed that these rifles were the scrapped weapons that were originally supposed to be either disposed of or modified and were instead sent to the Black Market, where they made their way to The Zone.
The L85's texture, if looked at in the gamedata files (once extracted), there is a radiation symbol (or sticker) on the SUSAT Scope, in front and at the bottom because of the scope's tritium lining.
This weapon's poor durability in the games corresponds with the earlier versions of the L85 in real-life, which had very questionable reliability until it was revised by Heckler & Koch.
The model in the STALKER series includes the green plastic dust cover on the end of the barrel, this would obviously be removed for firing (or would rapidly be removed for you) – underneath is a five-slotted muzzle break/flash suppressor.
On Shadow of Chernobyl, when you run with it in your hands, if you look down you can see a grenade launcher, even though the weapon doesn't have one attached and cannot attach one.
The weapon featured in the entire series is the L85A1 model and not the A2 model. The defining feature that this is the A1 model is that the handle used to pull the bolt of the weapon is cylindrical while the handle used on the A2 is a hook. The IL 86's bolt in games always used a cylindrical handle, along with the fact on how the IL 86s in the zone were British army surplus that were either meant to be modified into the more modern A2 model or to be scrapped and instead made their way to the Black Market, and the A1's questionable durability in real life that is also prevalent in games.
