Ethane is a miscellaneous item in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. It is a large canister full of ethane.

Description[]

A canister full of ethane that can rarely be found on the field (mainly in parking lots, abandoned barns and the Agroprom facilities). If shot, the container will explode after a few seconds and kill or injure any living beings around it. Once shot, the canister will take a short while to explode, but this period can be shortened by further shooting at it.

The explosion a canister produces is quite powerful, being similar to that of a grenade, although covering a shorter radius. The player can pick up and carry this item in their inventory, and then drop it on a strategic location to set a trap and instantly kill many gathered enemies at once.

The explosion produced by a canister of Ethane is considered neutral and won't be accounted on the player's behalf, which makes these items very useful when completing assassination jobs when the target is accompanied by other characters, without them turning hostile against the player. The player can drop the canister near to the target character, shoot it and kill them without the other characters retaliating against the player.

A canister of Ethane is remarkably heavy, weighing 15 kg. As such, it isn't recommended to carry these items around all the time. However, since they are relatively rare to find, it's advisable to store them in a safe location (like a chest) and then come back for them when needed.

Trivia[]

  • As Ethane canisters can be carried in the player's inventory (uncommon of these types of items), it is believed that these items could have been planned to have other uses (such as fueling machines or vehicles), but that this idea was scrapped in the final game. However, this is just speculation.
