Well, friend, we got more plans here than God Almighty on the first day of creation! We need to finish building the base - that's our priority. Then we'll need to recruit some more people... but they'll come to us themselves, you'll see! Folks know that we're fighting for a just cause! Once we have built a decent army, we'll show the bandits not to mess with us. We've been taking crap from them for ages, and there's no place for their kind in the Zone! And after that... well, I believe the day will come when we move deeper into the Zone. We might even reach the center - the dream of every stalker in here! We've got great things ahead of us, I'm telling you, man!
― Father Valerian

Father Valerian (Otets Valerian / Отец Валерьян) is the leader of the Free stalkers during the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.

Background[]

He has been in the exclusion zone since 2000 and originally made a living salvaging scrap found in it. When the Zone initially appeared, his group was spooked but continued on with their lives. Everything changed when they found their first artifact (which was never specified) and in his own words, "It was worth its weight in gold!".

Some time before 2011, he took the leadership of the Free stalkers in the Cordon, with the objective of expanding the Free stalkers' control to the entirety of the Cordon and the Garbage. With that he mind, he concluded a deal with Major Khaletskiy, the commander of the local Military checkpoint, to allow safe passage of merchandise through the outpost and obtain information in exchange for money. However, Khaletskiy eventually betrayed the free stalkers when he began selling information about the stalkers to the Bandits, which prompted Valerian and his stalkers to kidnap the Major and hold him hostage at the stalkers' base.

Clear Sky[]

He can be found in the Loner's main base in the Cordon. The player is guided towards Valerian by Sidorovich, who is looking for loot that was taken from him in the midst of the confrontation between the free stalkers and the bandits, hoping that interrogating Khaletskiy would eventually reveal the location of the goods. Khaletskiy however refuses to disclose the location of the goods, prompting Valerian to suggest to the player to eliminate two of Khaletskiy's subordinates and their respective squads, so that the Major can be backed into a corner and forced to reveal the location of Sidorovich's items.

After this is done, the player can ask Valerian to join the Free stalkers and partake in the faction war against the Bandits.

If inquired, Father Valerian will claim to Scar that he will expand his Loner base. However, during the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, the base is completely derelict save for rookie Loners and Fleshes.

Conversation between Valerian and his right hand man Vasiliy aka Squint

Vasiliy remember how you promised to get me some shooters?
― Valerian

Its not that I mind Valerian! But think about how the army's going to wonder why I sold weapons to stalkers...
― Squint

And you think about this? Vasiliy if we dont put some heat on those army boys now they're gonna bleed us dry!
― Valerian

Alright Valerian, tomorrow my man is going to bring you everything I've got.
― Squint

Trivia[]

  • Father Valerian's corpse can be found, along with other dead Loners, in the Red Forest near the Space Anomaly; presumably killed by roaming mutants. However, he can still be found at the stalker base, alive, even after finding his dead body.
  • He has the title "Father" along with his name which would indicate he is a priest of a religion. However he nor the other stalkers does not mention anything about Valerian's priesthood.
    • Unused sound files refer to Valerian's priesthood much more strongly, such as "You were sent to me by the hand of God, only I don't really know why or what for...".
  • He is one of only two people in the series to have the title of Father, the other being Father Diodor.
