We need to find the recon unit! Major, find out what happened. What a hell... You be careful out here, okay? And Major, keep me posted.
Kovalsky

Missing recon unit is a main mission task in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Description[]

This mission is given as soon as the player speaks to Kovalsky, following the completion of the first part of Unidentified weapon. When the player is done speaking to Kovalsky, he suddenly receives a communication from Captain Klimenko. During the brief broadcast, Klimenko requests help before the communication shuts down. Unable to get another response, Kovalsky sends Major Degtyarev to investigate.

The map marker will highlight an area near the Department Store. There, the player will find the bodies of Klimenko and his men, although there are no hostiles nearby. This triggers a cutscene, although the follow-up sequence depends on the player's actions:

  • Normally, investigating the squad's notes reveals the location of a large Monolith presence in the Book Store, which triggers the mission Monolith forces.
  • However, if the player already wiped out the Monolith forces at the store on their own, then the squad's notes reveal that they did not see any significant Monolith presence anywhere in the area, which leaves Kovalsky perplexed at how a small Monolith team could've taken out the squad so easily.

Regardless of the above conditions, the mission ends here. In addition, if the Documents concerning item 62 were obtained, the mission Missing sentry is also obtained.

Rewards[]

There is no reward for completing the mission. The missions unlocked are determined by the player's actions before the mission, as noted above.

A trivial reward is that the player can loot the bodies of the soldiers. The valuable loot includes a Vintar BC and an SA Avalanche, both in random condition, that can be looted from Sgt. Ostrovsky and Valyushok, respectively.
