Novikov (Rus. Новиков; also known by his nickname Gray) is a technician appearing in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Background[]

According to Cold, Novikov is an extremely talented technician who is able to make a rifle out of a tin can, complete with spare ammo.

Appearances[]

Clear Sky[]

See for yourself. There's hardly any equipment - it's like life after a nuclear war! If we do get a hold of something it's about to fail anyway and there ain't shit around to use for spare parts. That's why I'm having to adapt whatever I find and use it as best I can... Only last week I needed to make a radio receiver. What do you think I used for parts? That's right, a goddamn fridge! Hah. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry...
― Grey

He serves as the main technician for Clear Sky and is described by his comrades as an expert in his field, with Cold saying that he can make a rifle out of an empty can with ammo to boot. The player can visit Grey in the Clear Sky base for equipment repairs and upgrades. He also hands out a quest to find and bring back USB drives with upgrade data for the Viper 5 submachine gun and the CS-3a body armor.

Offer[]

Despite Grey being stuck in the back ends of the zone, he is quite an accomplished technician as he can fully upgrade virtually every type of assault rifle, he is also notable for being the only technician to fully upgrade the FT 200M and one of the only technicians other than Yar who can upgrade the SVDm-2 and SVUmk-2.

Call of Pripyat[]

At first, I was hunting for artifacts just like everyone else, but my health was declining steadily until I realized I just can't do it anymore. Thankfully, I've got a brain cell or two, so it's not difficult to find work. I spent about a year with a faction made up of former scientists. They were good people... it's a pity they died in a blind pursuit of some hazy goal. After that I spent some time wandering the Zone and then I started working for the scientists. No regrets so far.
― Novikov about himself

He returns in Call of Pripyat where he works as a technician for the Ecologists and Professor Hermann in their bunker in Yanov. It is possible, but not likely, that Owl saved his life in the past as hinted when the player completes Owl's task regarding artifact detectors, saying that he owed him a favor.

Novikov can be interacted with to learn about the bunker and his personal life. He will mention that he used to work with a "certain Ecologist faction" before their demise. He will also have a unique dialogue if the player talks to him while wearing the CS-3a body armor, which he will recognize as his own handiwork.

Offer[]

Unlike in Clear Sky, he is not quite as useful a technician - he can not upgrade weapons as the Ecologist's mobile laboratory lacks the necessary materials and he initially cannot perform any upgrades whatsoever to armor or helmets. Completing the mission Intermittent psy-emissions will enable him to install some upgrades that improve the player's psi-protection, and completing the mission Anomaly research will enable him to upgrade the player's armor with a number of modifications that boost their resistance to anomalies. Some of these upgrades, such as the Sphere M12 helmet's tier 3 radiation/chemical protection upgrade, are exclusive to him.

After obtaining the achievement Research Assistant, he offers a 25% discount on all of his services.

Greetings

I'll be there in a moment.

Need something upgraded or repaired? We got enough duct tape to patch the whole Zone up if need be.

I repair faults in hardware, not in its owner's arms.

Farewell

Remember: to be a good shooter, get your gun talking at the right time.

You get anything else to fix, come to me for help.

Well, good luck.

Call of Pripyat[]

Greetings

Hello.

Hey.

Farewell

Good luck.

Bye.

Trivia[]

  • His name and face are taken from Alexandr Novikov, deputy director for technical security at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Novikov provided immense assistance to the developers of the game, providing them with the means to visit and collect information on the real-life Zone. [1]
  • The name "Grey" was one of three names confusingly used to refer to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl character Seriy before an early patch corrected it.
