STALKER 2's development suspended....officially
| “ | 'Stalkers, while most of you are angry and upset (which we understand) please know that since December 2011 the entire Stalker team (myself included) was working without pay on Stalker 2 while new investors were scouted. That is our dedication. Sadly we could not gain legal rights to the franchise. We are still the same team working now at Vostok Games and on Survarium. - Official STALKER | ” |
| “ | 'The reason we cannot continue with the development of Stalker 2 is we and our new investors we unable to come to an agreement with the IP rights onwer. The entire team that was working on Stalker is now working on a new project called Survarium. We are so grateful for the support over the years and despite our best efforts we have to move on from Stalker which is as hard for us as it is for you. However, we feel that our new studio and project will be something unique and fill the void left by Stalker as well as add a lot more! -Your Stalker Team-' - Official STALKER | ” |
That's pretty much the gist of it, STALKER 2 is now officially on ice until further notice. Will it ever get thawed out of cryo and get worked on again? Nobody knows.
The bright side? There's Survarium, a game now being developed by the former STALKER developers under Vostok Games, which pretty much a company comprised of the same people who developed the STALKER series. This will supposedly be open-ended like the STALKER series and will not just restricted to Chernobyl (or if it'll even feature Chernobyl at all.) as it'll expand outside of it and also has more features. They're calling it an "evolution" of the series.
Looks good right? The catch? It's an MMO, as in Massive Multiplayer Online. If we're lucky, they'll do this Hellgate: London style and feature an offline singleplayer mode in addition to the online mode and we can only hope they won't go down like WH40K: Dark Millenium. Will it be good? Will it live up to the glory of the STALKER series? Nobody knows yet, but Survarium looks good from the description and they are being developed by the same team who worked in GSC, so theres' a pretty good chance that it'll fill the void that STAKER 2 left in all of us.
But in either case, the STALKER series we all know and love pretty much ends here, may it rest in peace.
